Wells Fargo Fraud Fiasco: Couple Reclaims $5,040

A Stone Mountain couple found themselves in a bank-side melodrama, where Wells Fargo acts like nothing happened while $5,040 performs the classic disappearing act from their account. 💸🙄

According to local outlet WSB, Debbie Stanhouse keeps a hawk eye on the family finances and spotted trouble the moment it walked into the (digital) room.

“I said, ‘Jim, we have got to get online and look at this.’ I noticed two transactions totaling $5,040 we hadn’t made. We even called the gallery in Naples, and they said that didn’t happen here.”

Two transactions from an art gallery in Naples, Florida showed up as if the couple were all the way in Stone Mountain, not miles away. The Stanhouses later learned the charges were flagged as in-person purchases, and the gallery denied they ever occurred there. Magic trick, or just the bank being dramatic? 🧙‍♂️

After reporting the fraud, the bank rolled its eyes and denied the claim, saying its investigation found no irregularities. Debbie and Jim looked at each other like, “Great, we’re doing this now?” 🤷‍♀️

“We were really shocked when that came back and we thought, you know, what are we going to do now? Who has time to do this? You know, in this everyday life, this is a lot.”

Jim leaned on his financial-planner instincts, demanded the bank’s investigative file, filed a complaint with the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau and slapped on spending limits and purchase alerts to their debit card. He’s basically the human spreadsheet you never asked for. 🧾⚖️

The process dragged like a-season-of-trying-to-binish, but persistence paid off. Wells Fargo ultimately reversed its decision and returned the money. Jackpot, right? 🥳

In a statement, Wells Fargo said the issue was resolved after a thorough review and consideration of additional information. The bank peace-out was a little too calm for a $5,040 magic trick, but hey, victory is victory.
