Trump Whacks NY with $73.5M Highway Heist Over Trucker License Tussle

By Jove, the Trump administration has done it again, old chap! In a move that’s as bold as it is bewildering, they’ve decided to pilfer a cool $73.5 million from New York’s highway funds. Why, you ask? Well, it seems the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration has got its knickers in a twist over the state’s refusal to revoke nearly 33,000 commercial driver’s licenses issued to immigrants whose legal status has, shall we say, expired. A spot of bother, what?

  • Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy-a chap who clearly takes his audits seriously-claims the FMCSA found more than half of 200 sampled records had issues. Licenses, it seems, were still valid long after their holders’ authorization to be in the country had lapsed. Tsk, tsk.
  • Governor Kathy Hochul’s office, not one to take this lying down, called it a baseless attack on blue states. They insist New York issues CDLs by the book, following federally issued rules, and point to audits from the first Trump administration as proof of their compliance. Touché!
  • The DOT, not content with a mere $73.5 million, has threatened to withhold an additional $147 million if New York doesn’t toe the line. And if that doesn’t do the trick, they’ll bar the state from issuing new CDLs altogether. Jolly sporting of them, eh?

In a press release that could only be described as a masterpiece of bureaucratic bravado, Duffy declared, “I promised the American people I would hold any state leader accountable for failing to keep them safe from unvetted, unqualified foreign drivers.” He then added, with a flourish, “My message to New York’s far-left leadership is clear: families must be prioritized on American roads.” Quite the orator, our Duffy.

New York’s Response and What It Disputes

Governor Hochul’s office, naturally, wasn’t having any of it. Spokesman Sean Butler retorted that New York follows federally issued rules to the letter and accused Duffy of turning the whole affair into political theater. “This continues a yearlong pattern of Secretary Duffy threatening to withhold money that keeps our roads, subways, and other infrastructure safe for New Yorkers,” Butler huffed. “We will fight back, and once again we will win.” Bravo, Butler, bravo!

This legal spat isn’t exactly fresh off the presses. The DOT first raised the issue in December 2025, and California, ever the compliant sort, promptly revoked 17,000 licenses under similar pressure. New York, however, has dug in its heels, prompting Duffy to escalate from a warning to an executed reduction. A game of chicken, if ever there was one.

Why This Pattern Matters Beyond Highways

The $73.5 million cut is just the latest in a series of Trump administration maneuvers where federal funding is wielded like a sword against Democratic-led states. Previous targets have included New York’s congestion pricing program, subway funding tied to crime metrics, and attempts to redirect Amtrak and commuter rail funding. Courts, bless their hearts, have blocked several of these attempts, but the pattern persists.

Trucking industry groups, naturally, are cheering from the sidelines, arguing that improperly licensed commercial drivers pose genuine public safety risks. The August 2025 Florida crash that killed three people-cited by Duffy as the catalyst for the nationwide CDL audit-adds a sobering note to this otherwise farcical affair.

And so, the Trump administration’s use of federal funding as a compliance tool against blue states continues apace, with implications for everything from crypto reform to midterm pressure points. One can’t help but wonder if this is federalism or merely a game of political hardball. Either way, it’s a spectacle worthy of a Wodehouse novel, complete with blustering bureaucrats and indignant governors. What a show!
