The Lundins’ Golden Folly: A Stock Market Tale of Hubris and Gold

In the grand tradition of human folly, a Swedish-Canadian billionaire family has stumbled upon a financial alchemy that even Prometheus might envy. Their secret? A little-known mining stock, Montage Gold Corp (MAUTF), which, with the grace of a drunkard on a tightrope, soared 21x in a year.

Back in March 2024, the Lundins, already seasoned in the art of mining chaos, threw $17.5 million CAD ($12.88 million) at MAUTF, a Vancouver-based firm whose primary claim to fame was trading at a laughable $0.70 CAD ($0.52) per share. Bloomberg, that omniscient oracle of finance, chronicled their audacity.

Why the gamble? Ah, the noble cause: to breathe life into Montage’s Ivory Coast mine, a project so promising it could make a geologist weep. The Lundins, ever the benevolent overlords, injected capital like a doctor might a placebo, hoping for a miracle.

And miracle it became. In January, as if summoned by a mischievous market spirit, MAUTF announced its Ivory Coast mine would produce gold by 2026-three years earlier than expected. The stock, now trading at $15.04 CAD ($11.07), gifted the Lundins a 2,409% return. One suspects the company’s geologists celebrated by drinking champagne from gold-plated mugs.

The mine itself, a treasure trove of $3.1 billion in gold (assuming the metal behaves like a well-mannered asset), sits atop a 16-year lifespan. Yet gold, that fickle lover, now trades at $5,183-7.58% shy of its $5,602 peak. A reminder, perhaps, that even the earth’s bounty demands humility.

With 20% of Montage in their coffers, the Lundins now bask in a $759 million valuation. Their net worth? A modest $18.1 billion. One imagines them sipping tea in a villa, pondering whether to invest in asteroid mining next.

A representative for the Lundins, when asked for comment, chose silence-a decision as prudent as it was poetic.
