There are nights out in New York City, and then there are nights out where you find yourself jostling elbows with criminal masterminds and blockchain boffins. Luckily for the goodly denizens of Manhattan, the chaps at Coinbase played Sherlockâwith a dash of Hercule Poirotâsniffing out murderers and making crypto look positively heroic.
Coinbase Throws Its Bowler Hat Into the Ring
Paul Grewal, Coinbaseâs legal head honcho (so much legal gravitas, the courtroom bows in his presence), announced on May 6th that the company’s blockchain eggheads were called in to assist with a New York City whodunit that would have taxed even the likes of Jeeves. The NYPD, not wanting to look like chumps, teamed up with Coinbase to unpick a nasty spree of robberies, overdoses, and night-time neâer-do-wellery plaguing the swinging precincts of good old Manhattan.
The dastardly dastards picked on club-goersâoften of the LGBTQ+ setâlurking around the 7th and 9th precincts. Their toffee-nosed technique? Drugging, pinching the victimâs phone, and then draining their bank accounts with faster-than-a-minted-bitcoin dexterity. The result? Lost money, ruined nights, and, in the most ghastly outcome, an encounter with the Grim Reaper himself. đą
As Grewal recounted, âIn some instances, victims were found dead from fentanyl-laced substances. In total, over $250,000 was pinchedâincluding on our very own Coinbase. Makes you almost wish for the days when miscreants just filched your monocle.â
The criminal league laundered funds faster than a butler hides the silverware, using banking apps, crypto platforms, and peer-to-peer whatsits. Most people wouldnât recoverâexcept, perhaps, from a hangover and a sudden distrust of digital wallets.
Bung their hopes all you want, but Coinbase waltzed in with a bit of techno-wizardryâblockchain analysis, tracing wallets to the same pack of neâer-do-wells, and tossing the entire criminal plot into glorious disarray. Grewal, with the delight of a man whoâs just solved the Times cryptic crossword, declared that it led to convictions for our not-so-friendly neighborhood criminals, Jayqwan Hamilton, Robert DeMaio, and Jacob Barrosoâguilty of myriad unsavory charges. One might almost feel sorry for them, were they not such rotters.
On the grand significance, Grewal philosophised:
âIt was among the toughest pickles weâve faced. But let no soul say the blockchain canât sniff out the truthâespecially when our villains fancy themselves smarter than the average crypto cop.”
And for those who grumble that crypto is the root of all evil, Grewal mused, âCrypto doesnât swan about in an alternate universe. Itâs right here, helping solve some of the nastiest messes the authorities can dish up. Today, Coinbase is the Watson to law enforcementâs Holmes.â đľď¸ââď¸đđŞ
