Metaplanet’s BTC Bonanza: Now a Mid-Cap Marvel 🚀

Metaplanet, a Bitcoin treasury firm that’s basically just a hotel chain that got bored and said, “You know what? Let’s hoard Bitcoin instead,” has officially graduated from small-cap obscurity to mid-cap stardom. FTSE Russell, that index provider who probably still thinks Excel is a luxury, just promoted them in their September 2025 review. Now they’re slumming it with the big boys in the FTSE Japan Index-mid-cap and large-cap companies who’ve never heard of “supply-capped coins” but play it safe with dividends and quarterly reports.

Because nothing says “serious business” like turning a hotel chain into a Bitcoin hoarder’s paradise. Metaplanet’s Q2 performance was so strong, they basically sneezed and the market went, “Ooh, maybe we should let them in.” Now they’re in the FTSE Japan Index, which is just a fancy way of saying, “We’ve updated our list of companies that aren’t named ‘Meta’ but still think they’re cool.”

And because the universe loves a good punchline, being in the FTSE Japan Index automatically gets them into the FTSE All-World Index. Suddenly, passive investors are like, “Wait, is this Bitcoin? No, it’s just a hotel company that’s holding a bunch of Bitcoin. Cool, I’ll take that.”

Metaplanet outperformed the TOPIX Core 30-yes, the one with Toyota, Sony, and Nintendo-by 187% YTD. Meanwhile, the TOPIX 30 managed a meek 7.2%. If that’s not a middle finger to traditional finance, I don’t know what is. 🙋♂️

They’re holding 18,888 BTC now, which makes them the seventh-largest publicly traded Bitcoin holder. That’s more than Coinbase, Tesla, and Hut 8 combined. And because they’re nothing if not ambitious, they’re eyeing a 2027 goal of 210,000 BTC-1% of the total supply. Because why stop at 18k when you can have 210k? 🤷♀️

Originally a hotel operator, Metaplanet rebranded in 2024 with the enthusiasm of someone who just realized their Netflix password is “password123.” Now they’re Japan’s largest BTC treasury company, and their CEO, Simon Gerovich, is reportedly considering buying a digital bank. Because nothing says “financial innovation” like a hotel company trying to become a bank. 🏦💸
