Bitcoin’s price dropped slightly Friday morning as traders prepared for a major options expiry event. Over $14 billion worth of Bitcoin contracts on Deribit are scheduled to be settled.
At the time this was written, the cryptocurrency was trading around $68,800, a decrease of about 3% over the past 24 hours. This followed an unsuccessful attempt to rise above $71,000 earlier in the week. The price drop is happening as technical indicators suggest the upward trend is losing strength, including a recent negative signal from the MACD histogram.

Traders are keeping a close eye on today’s options expiration. The price level where most options holders would experience a loss – around $75,000 – is quite high. Because of the large amount of money involved, many anticipate fluctuating prices and possible sharp increases in volatility as traders adjust or close their positions before the weekend.
As a researcher tracking Bitcoin, I’ve observed that the price has been stuck in a relatively narrow range throughout March. After a more significant drop earlier in 2026, it’s found some support around $68,000, but we’ve repeatedly seen attempts to move higher fail. This constant push and pull is starting to dampen the optimistic outlook we were seeing previously.
Investors who plan to hold for the long term are still positive, citing factors like reduced supply after the recent halving event and the continued investment coming from spot ETFs. However, right now, everyone is watching to see how the market reacts to today’s options and futures expirations.
Traders are preparing for possible big price movements or a period of stability next week, as the Deribit options expiration happens later on Friday and trading volume is expected to decrease over the weekend.
