Ethereum’s Grand Plans to Fix Everything: Will They Finally Catch Up?

In a most illuminating revelation, Binance Research has recently divulged some rather “exciting” findings about Ethereum. Brace yourselves: the long-anticipated Pectra and Fusaka upgrades may, just may, be the network’s savior in its grand quest to achieve scalability and solidify its place in the crypto payments saga.

Let’s be clear, Ethereum has been strutting around as one of the most secure and widely utilized blockchains for a while now. Yet, despite its impeccable reputation, the report makes it known that Solana and BNB Smart Chain are not only nipping at Ethereum’s heels but, with their quicker speeds and friendlier price tags, have started winning the race when it comes to decentralized exchange (DEX) volumes and fees.

Scalability and Usability Improvements: The Holy Grail of Crypto?

According to Binance, Ethereum’s current limitations – such as sky-high fees, sluggish transaction speeds, and a developer ecosystem that’s a bit like a scattered puzzle – are dragging the network down. The rise of Layer 2 (L2) networks has further complicated things, decreasing the value captured at Ethereum’s base layer. It’s not looking too hot for the old guard, is it?

Enter the Pectra upgrade, a knight in shining armor expected to ride in May 2025 – assuming, of course, it can shake off a series of delays. This upgrade is said to bring critical improvements that might, just might, tackle some of these long-standing issues. It will merge the Prague execution layer with the Electra consensus layer and implement 11 Ethereum Improvement Proposals (EIPs), a fancy way of saying “we’ve got a plan.”

Among the most notable is EIP-7251, which will allow Ethereum’s maximum staking balance to leap from a modest 32 ETH to a whopping 2,048 ETH. Perfect for managing the load of more than a million active validators. Then, there’s EIP-7691, which will increase blob capacity—no, it’s not a new snack food, but an expansion of Ethereum’s ability to store more data on the mainnet without exploding your wallet.

And just when you thought we were done, EIP-7702 arrives to introduce account abstraction. Essentially, this upgrade will let externally owned accounts play dress-up as smart contract wallets, giving you the magical powers of bundled transactions and gas sponsorship. Because who doesn’t want to feel like a wizard in the crypto world?

While these updates aim to make Ethereum a bit more bearable, Binance is quick to remind us that none of these changes actually do anything to improve Ethereum’s value narrative or its famed censorship resistance. So, don’t go holding your breath just yet.

Next, we have Fusaka, arriving late 2025 to take things up a notch. This upgrade introduces PeerDAS via EIP-7594, which, in layman’s terms, is a big step toward the mythical full danksharding (no, that’s not a typo). This will supposedly boost Ethereum’s data availability – if you’re into that sort of thing.

Moreover, the Ethereum Object Format will make smart contract creation a walk in the park, reducing execution overhead and ensuring developers don’t feel like they’re working with stone tools.

Data Availability and ETH’s Value Woes: Will It Ever End?

Despite these well-meaning improvements, Binance doesn’t mince words in noting that Ethereum’s role as the preferred data availability layer is facing serious competition from other platforms like Celestia, EigenDA, and NearDA. These newcomers are outpacing Ethereum with raw throughput and, most importantly, lower costs. But hey, who needs cheaper and faster when you’ve got security, right?

Though Ethereum’s security remains top-notch, Binance’s research raises a worrying question: Can Ethereum keep up with its hefty reliance on L2 networks while maintaining ETH’s value? The answer, according to the report, is uncertain. There are vague suggestions about repricing the blob market or forcing L2s to pay fees, but these ideas are still floating around in the ether (pun intended) with no clear resolution in sight.
