According to Cloudflare CEO Matthew Prince, cryptocurrencies need to enable fast, small payments – specifically stablecoins – to work with AI programs on the internet. In a recent interview, Prince explained that the current online advertising system is failing because AI bots are using website content without driving traffic – and therefore revenue – back to the sites that create it.
Why Crypto Stablecoins Need 100 Million TPS
According to Prince, the real problem isn’t how much data the internet can handle, but rather the financial implications of increased traffic. Cloudflare predicts that by early 2027, AI-driven bot traffic will surpass traffic from actual people, significantly increasing the demands on websites. While the internet likely has the technical capacity to cope, the bigger challenge is determining who will cover the costs of the necessary servers, security measures, content publishing, and overall infrastructure.
The main challenge is figuring out how to fund this and who will cover the costs, Prince explained. For the past 30 years, the internet has relied on advertising and subscriptions, but that won’t work here because AI agents won’t click on ads. And a single subscription allowing agents to access all the content wouldn’t ensure the content creators are properly paid.
My research focuses on Cloudflare’s new “pay for crawl” system and its use of stablecoin payments. The idea isn’t new – the HTTP 402 “payment required” code has been around for a while. However, the key missing component was a payment system that could handle very small transactions – fractions of a cent – at a massive scale. Traditional credit card networks like Visa simply aren’t set up for this, as the transaction fees would make such tiny payments impractical.
Cloudflare’s massive size means its needs are particularly demanding. According to its CEO, Matthew Prince, the company processes around 500 million requests every second. They believe that between 1% and 10% of those requests could potentially generate revenue, which translates to roughly 5 to 50 million paid requests per second if their new model becomes widely adopted. This is why Prince says that even systems capable of handling 2 million transactions per second aren’t fast enough to meet Cloudflare’s likely requirements.
We often hear companies claim they can handle a huge number of transactions – like 2 million per second. That’s great, but we actually need a system that can handle far more, starting with 10 million transactions per second. In fact, if anyone wants to build a blockchain capable of supporting 100 million transactions per second, we’d love to hear from them, said Prince.
Prince views cryptocurrency as both promising and technically challenging. He doesn’t see stablecoins as simply a way to make payments, but as a foundational element for a future internet where automated programs (bots) can independently pay for services. However, he believes the current blockchain technology isn’t fast enough to support a large-scale switchover for a company like Cloudflare.
The goal isn’t just to put AI-generated content behind paywalls. Instead, the idea is to allow people to access information for free, while AI programs automatically pay publishers and those who maintain the necessary technology through small, automated payments. As Bankless put it, “Humans get content for free and the robots pay a ton,” which Prince agreed accurately describes the vision.
According to Cloudflare, their main function is to act as a central coordinator. Because they handle traffic for a significant portion of the internet and work with many AI companies, they already have tools that website owners can use to manage how AI ‘crawlers’ access their sites. Cloudflare’s goal is to empower publishers to choose whether to allow AI systems free access to their content, block them completely, or require payment for access.
At press time, the total crypto market cap stood at $2.55 trillion.
