So, nation-states are jumping on the Bitcoin bandwagon now? Wow, how original. Back in the day, the height of Bitcoin’s glory was getting two greasy pizzas delivered. Talk about a glow-up.
Sixteen years later, and we’re still celebrating this guy’s hunger-induced genius. May 22, folks-mark your calendars. It’s Bitcoin Pizza Day, because why not?
The Day a Guy Traded a Fortune for Garlic Sauce
May 2010: Laszlo Hanyecz, a software developer with a craving, posts an offer online: 10,000 BTC for two Papa John’s pizzas. Yes, Papa John’s. Let that sink in. $41 worth of Bitcoin for some mediocre pizza. What a legend.
Fast forward to today, and those 10,000 BTC are worth over $767 million. When Bitcoin hit its peak in 2025, it was briefly worth $1.2 billion. So, yeah, Laszlo’s basically the patron saint of “I told you so.”
Happy Bitcoin Pizza Day.
Sixteen years ago, a guy traded a small country’s GDP for two pizzas. Today, we’re still arguing about how to tax it. Progress?
Crypto’s a $3T industry now. Clear rules? Sensible tax? Ha. Good luck with that. – Crypto Council for Innovation (@crypto_council) May 22, 2026
Apparently, this wasn’t just a quirky footnote. Nischal Shetty, some crypto exchange guy, says it proved Bitcoin could buy stuff. Groundbreaking. Meanwhile, in 2010, the Bitcoin network was processing like, three transactions a day. Riveting.
From Pepperoni to Oil Tankers: Bitcoin’s Midlife Crisis
Now, Iran’s letting ships pay tolls in Bitcoin. Yes, Iran. Because nothing says “stable currency” like a country with sanctions out the wazoo. Sam Lyman, some research guy, says there’s no proof anyone’s actually paying in Bitcoin. Surprise, surprise. Tether’s still running the show.

Back in the good ol’ US of A, lawmakers are trying to make Bitcoin happen. Strategic reserves? Tax exemptions? Sure, why not. Meanwhile, Laszlo’s still the hero we didn’t know we needed. Trading Bitcoin for pizza when no one else would? That’s commitment.
So, here we are. A $41 experiment turned into a global obsession. National reserves, international trade, the future of money-all because a guy wanted pizza. What a world.
