Bitcoin Miners Go Face-Palm: Data Centers and AI Take Over! đ€đ„
Riot Platforms (NASDAQ: RIOT) has cunningly appointed Jonathan Gibbs as Chief Data Center Officer. Yes, while your uncle argues about Dogecoin, Riot is busy throwing its hat into the HPC and AI ring. Because whatâs better than mining bitcoins? Why, hosting extraterrestrial data, of course!
This article is borrowed from Theminermag, a little lighthouse in the foggy sea of crypto mining news, bringing you the latestâbecause who doesnât love more ways to burn electricity?
Gibbs, the seasoned veteran with more than 15 years of playing with large-scale data centers, will now lead Riotâs bold new endeavor: a platform aimed at hyperscale and enterprise clients. Yeah, because building giant brick boxes is just what the world needsâmore gray, more wires, more coffee for engineers.
Riotâs latest move is the industryâs equivalent of pretending to be surprisedâmajor Bitcoin miners are suddenly acting like theyâve discovered new shiny toys: data centers, HPC, and AI hosting. Earlier this year, Riot decided to hit pause on its precious Bitcoin mining expansion at its Corsicana facility in Texasâ600 megawatts of glorious capacity now reserved solely for…something else. Maybe alien research, or a really elaborate ping-pong tournament?
âThe creation of this new data center platform furthers Riotâs strategy to maximize the value of its assets by expanding into non-bitcoin-related data centers,â declared CEO Jason Les, probably while hiding a mischievous grin behind his coffee mug.
Gibbs, the hero of data center lore, brings a record of more than a gigawatt of projects across North America, Europe, and Asia, with investments of over $17 billionâenough to buy all the Bitcoin in the world… or at least pretend to. Before joining Riot, he was executive vice president at Prime Data Centers, leading US data center designs that probably have enough cooling to make the Arctic jealous.
Meanwhile, Riotâs buddies in the mining world are jumping into HPC and AI hostingâfor diversification, or because they finally realized Bitcoin is just a passing fad? Bitfarms hired James Bond, because who better to lead HPC initiatives than a guy with a license to chill, and HIVE Digital set up subsidiaries for high-performance computing. Applied Digital, already operating data centers, saw its stock soar like a rocketâprobably hoping AI will finally âunderstandâ it.
As the crypto industry dives deeper into data centers and AIâbecause apparently mining isnât enoughâone can only wonder if weâre heading for a future where machines run everything, and humans just get to press âStartâ. Or maybe just watch cat videos. Either way, it’s a spectacle.
