Ah, 2026. It began, as most things do, with a renewed flutter in the markets – a sort of nervous twitch among the altcoins. One could almost hear them whispering, “Is this it?” The Altcoin Season Index, that fickle oracle, began to tick upwards, suggesting a rotation. A rotation! As if investors adhere to some preordained script. 😂
But looking back at the tempestuous year of 2025, a rather…peculiar divergence emerged. Investors, you see, decided to ignore the usual playbook. A scandalous disregard for tradition! They deviated. Oh, the humanity!
Historically – and one use of the word ‘historical’ is essential, to establish what should have happened – altcoins were supposed to flourish during those quiet moments when Bitcoin was feeling…contemplative. A period of consolidation, if you will. But no. This time, the anticipated ballet of capital failed to materialize. It was rather sad, honestly.
The ETH/BTC ratio remained stubbornly range-bound, effectively placing a lid on Ethereum’s speculative ambitions. A gilded cage, if you will. 😔

And the numbers, dear reader, don’t lie (though some try). They revealed this little embarrassment quite clearly in the 2025 returns. Ethereum, poor thing, closed the year down a rather ungainly 10.97%, slumping below the psychologically important $3,000 mark. Bitcoin, ever the stoic, fared slightly better, shrinking by a mere 6.24%. Clearly, capital preferred the established order. A rather dull affair, all things considered.
Yet, despite this palpable weakness, Ethereum continued to boast impressive on-chain metrics. As if determined to remain optimistic in the face of adversity. Remarkable! And, surprisingly, it wasn’t alone.
Similar stirrings were observed across other Layer 1s – a clear signal that something… different was afoot this cycle. A conspiracy of fundamentals, perhaps? 🧐
Naturally, this disconnect between price action and those pesky fundamentals is causing quite a stir. With the very notion of “speculative” altcoins under intense scrutiny, all eyes are now fixed upon the Layer 1s. Is 2026, then, destined to be their moment of glory? One almost shudders at the thought of another year of disappointment.
2026 altcoin divergence: Speculation vs. utility
As the new year stumbles forward, the predictions are growing increasingly… heated. One theme, however, stands out above the cacophony: Layer 1 utility. From the intricacies of the RWA market and the stability of stablecoins to the ongoing upgrades to the chains themselves, 2026 is starting, very slowly, to reveal a focus on tangible network activity rather than simple, empty “hype.”
And the key, naturally, resides in the on-chain numbers. One cannot argue with a cold, hard ledger.
Behold! Ethereum recently processed a record 2.23 million transactions, a feat unmatched in its 10-year history, all while managing to keep fees under a paltry $0.01 and maintaining stable finality. No congestion, you see. Imagine! 🤯

Furthermore, other Layer 1s are exhibiting similar tendencies. A most curious trend.
In this context, our esteemed AMBCrypto’s thesis appears ever so slightly more plausible. It’s true, 2025 didn’t produce the “altcoin season” everyone so keenly anticipated, but the market still witnessed a shift, a growing influx of ETF flows toward these altcoins indicating that this isn’t merely a fleeting anomaly. One hopes.
Now, as we tentatively proceed into 2026, the foundations appear somewhat sound. High-cap altcoins are showcasing respectable on-chain usage, while the swirling mists of speculative activity are beginning to dissipate. This divergence, my friends, could very well ignite a full-blown “L1 season,” with the Layer 1 networks finally taking center stage. Or it could all fall apart. Who’s to say? 🤷♀️
Final Thoughts
- Despite altcoins enduring a rather lackluster 2025 – outperformed by Bitcoin, the nerve! – their on-chain activity reveals robust fundamentals, a stark divergence between the realm of speculation and genuine usage.
- With high-cap altcoins now displaying impressive network activity, and speculation beginning to ebb, 2026 could be the year the Layer 1s finally seize the spotlight. Or not. Don’t quote me on that.
