With the ongoing intensification of the AI competition among major tech companies and its integration into numerous industries, a growing sense of unease is emerging: when AI surpasses us in roles such as doctors, engineers, lawyers, teachers, financial analysts or writers, how on earth will we be able to generate income?
Breathe deeply, try not to worry. If you look closely, what we’re experiencing now with the automation of information in recent decades, and perhaps even back in the industrial age of the last few centuries, is a natural progression. The early tech skeptics were similar to the Luddites, a group of British workers who objected to the increased use of mechanized looms and knitting frames. These artisans had poured their heart and soul into their craft, and they argued that those now operating these new machines were stealing their livelihoods. Does this resonate?
Their protests escalated to violence, including the destruction of factories where these machines were being used. In the short term, this may have offered some relief to the Luddites, but in the long run, it wasn’t a successful strategy. The mechanized looms and their successors ultimately dominated the marketplace of commerce and innovation.
Present alternatives misvalue both man and machine
The ongoing predicament humans face with existential crises due to machine integration isn’t merely a timeless story, but one that repeatedly resurfaces in any epoch where people have grown dependent on technology. In the early 2000s, Amazon encountered its own Luddite-like resistance when it started using robots for automating warehouse tasks, as employees shared similar apprehensions as the original Luddites.
It’s possible that there were people who objected to the wheel, since many had built their lives around carrying goods on their backs. However, their opposition wasn’t recorded in history. Progress never comes from going backward; it lies in learning how to adjust to the ever-advancing current.
We are currently experiencing a significant phase in AI advancement, marking potentially the final stage of an entirely automated information era. This shift signals the end of this era and ushers in something new, yet undefined. Though it may seem unusual or risky at present, it’s simply another instance of adjustments – small and large – that we have consistently had to make throughout history.
With artificial intelligence (AI) rapidly advancing and taking over more tasks, economies are grappling with the reality that they’ve traditionally relied heavily on human labor. The concern arises when the majority of jobs transition from being done by humans to AI systems. Regardless if it’s physical work, manual labor, mental labor, or creative work, humans have always been the source of income generation.
A viable alternative that’s frequently suggested instead of the current labor-centric model is Universal Basic Income (UBI), which eliminates the need for traditional labor by providing a basic income to all citizens. However, UBI has not been successfully implemented on a large scale due to its failure to consider the natural human drive for motivation and prioritization, which are often fueled by incentives within hierarchies.
Enter the Intellect Economy
When examining the upheaval brought about by previous technological advancements, our attention often gravitates towards the technology itself, rather than the manner of its implementation or the parties responsible for that deployment. The apprehensions surrounding these technologies are less about the technologies themselves and more about how those with economic power used them to exacerbate economic disparity, by leveraging these technologies to mimic creative labor and further their own economic advantage.
To safeguard against this situation, we propose a novel form of Universal Basic Income: Universal Baseline Intelligence. Just as the industrial revolution automated physical creation processes, today’s technology is automating the generation of ideas. Intellect is being utilized, and therefore, it should be financially compensated. It’s essential to assign appropriate value to the contributions made to these new systems, not just for ethical reasons, but also to gain broad acceptance across industries at all levels, thereby sustaining this new economy.
In constructing a fresh economy with revised values, it’s crucial to safeguard individuals’ rights to control and profit from their own creative works, especially in the digital realm. Among various methods, decentralization seems to be the most straightforward and effective way to guarantee ownership stays with the original creator, while enabling diverse types of intellectual “possessions” to be monetized effortlessly. Let’s focus on fostering an Intellect Economy where people own their personal AI agents that learn from human experiences, generating recurring earning opportunities.
We have a chance to shape the AI economy into a beneficial transformation instead of a hazardous disruption that benefits only a select few at the cost of many. As we progress toward a post-agentic, post-web era and move away from attention-based systems towards intention-driven ones, it’s essential to develop solutions that prioritize humans as the focal point of intelligence. If we manage to achieve this, the concerns about AI will transform into aspirations for freeing humanity from meaningless labor and steering us towards a more rewarding and enlightened form of intellectual wealth creation.
