It has come to the attention of this humble scribe that a federal grand jury in San Francisco hath indicted three gentlemen of Tennessee, whose conduct is most unbecoming, on charges of conspiracy to commit robbery and kidnapping. These villains, as reported by prosecutors, have been engaged in a series of what are termed “wrench attacks”-a most brutish practice wherein victims are threatened or harmed to procure their cryptocurrency, thereby stealing no less than $6.5 million from the fair folk of California.
A Violent Scheme With A Simple Disguise
Elijah Armstrong, Nino Chindavanh, and Jayden Rucker, it is alleged, masqueraded as delivery drivers, a profession one might suppose to be of benign intent, to gain entry into their targets’ homes. Once within, they resorted to threats of violence to extract the coveted seed phrases-those mystical keys to digital wealth which, if uttered under duress, grant full access to a wallet. One might imagine the scene akin to a poorly written play, where a villainous figure demands a password with the fervor of a man seeking a spouse’s dowry.
According to the esteemed Justice Department, these nefarious acts transpired between November 22 and December 31 of the previous year, casting a shadow over the Los Angeles area and the San Francisco Bay Area. Prosecutors have identified at least four individuals who suffered this fate during that period, though one suspects the number may be higher had the victims been more vigilant in their door-answering practices.
One unfortunate soul was compelled to transfer a staggering $6.5 million in cryptocurrency to a wallet under the control of the rogues, a sum that alone accounts for the majority of the ill-gotten gains. One wonders if the victims, in their haste to relinquish their digital treasures, considered the possibility of simply refusing entry-or, perhaps, investing in a more robust door.

Craig Missakian, the US Attorney for the Northern District of California, hath made no effort to soften the blow of his words. “These individuals, as alleged, terrorized their victims in the hopes of stealing vast sums of cryptocurrency,” he declared in a statement on Monday. “The scheme was not only sophisticated, it was brazen, violent, and dangerous.” One must commend Mr. Missakian for his candor, though one suspects he might have found a more elegant turn of phrase had he not been constrained by the exigencies of legal prose.

Physical Attacks On Crypto Owners Are Rising
The trio in question were apprehended in December, a timely intervention one might say, though it is to be hoped that their capture was not marred by the usual bureaucratic delays. Armstrong and Rucker are scheduled to appear in court on Tuesday, while Chindavanh awaits his turn on June 26. All three face charges of conspiracy to commit robbery, conspiracy to commit kidnapping, attempted robbery, and attempted kidnapping. One might suppose that the legal system, ever the arbiter of justice, will ensure these gentlemen meet their due end.
Reports from the esteemed TRM Labs indicate that such attacks have grown more common, a fact one might attribute to the ease with which personal data may now be procured online. It is a curious irony that the very technology which promised privacy and security should become a hunting ground for the unscrupulous.

Crypto wrench attacks are turning digital wealth into a real-world target.

The public nature of crypto wealth-visible on-chain to anyone who knows where to look-combined with the perceived anonymity of transactions has made holders attractive targets for criminals willing to use force. One might say the situation is as precarious as a lady’s reputation in the hands of a gossipmonger.
The California cases are by no means isolated. French authorities, in their own peculiar fashion, have charged 88 individuals in April in connection with similar attacks on cryptocurrency owners in their fair country. One might conclude that the world is united in its enthusiasm for digital currency-and its villains.
Seed Phrases And The Limits Of Digital Security
Such physical attacks expose a gap that no encryption can mend. A seed phrase, once spoken under duress, hands over complete control of a wallet with no way to reverse a transfer after the fact. The indictment, filed in federal court in San Francisco, was unsealed on Monday. One might imagine the court proceedings to be as dramatic as a well-written novel, though with the added benefit of actual criminality.
