Ah, the world of stablecoins. Where the only thing more predictable than their price is the drama. This time, Circle-yes, the same company that makes USDC as reliable as your mom’s potato salad-has updated its terms of service. What does this mean for you, the average stablecoin enthusiast? Well, apparently, you can now buy firearms with your beloved USDC. Yes, you heard that right. Guns and stablecoins-what a match made in digital heaven. 🔫💰
On November 5, Circle made a rather
interesting
amendment to its Prohibited Transactions policy. They officially reversed their previous stance of not allowing USDC to purchase “weapons of any kind.” Why? Apparently, the U.S. Constitution says something about a “right to bear arms”-and who are we to argue with that? 🎯
By November 6, Senator Cynthia Lummis threw her hat in the ring, applauding Circle for being oh-so-patriotic. According to Lummis, this update is a win for “law-abiding gun owners.” Isn’t that just heartwarming? 🌟
In a statement to the NSSF, Circle made it clear that its new policy is all about supporting constitutional rights, with a hefty side of “don’t mess with our terms.” Apparently, the company has always believed that money should be free-unless, of course, you’re using it for anything illegal, but that’s a whole other matter. 💸
The Second Amendment, that little nugget from the U.S. Constitution, says something like “People should be able to have guns.” In short: don’t mess with a well-regulated militia, or you’ll be up against one very determined stablecoin issuer. 😅
Now, this decision wasn’t without controversy. Since October, gun rights advocates have been having a field day pointing out the glaring issue with Circle’s terms. The Americans for Tax Reform called out Circle for forbidding firearms purchases, and even threw some shade at Circle CEO Jeremy Allaire’s Democrat-leaning donations. Politics in crypto? Who would’ve thought. 🤷♀️
After all the uproar, the NSSF published a bold proclamation: “Freedom can’t survive if your payment tools work against you.” Amen, my friends. 🙌
What Transactions Are Prohibited Under Circle’s Terms?
Now, onto the important details. Circle has a whole laundry list of things they don’t like. Aside from firearms, USDC cannot be used for transactions involving illegal activities, like money laundering or buying fake IDs. But don’t worry-if you’re trying to launder money with USDC, you’re out of luck. 👀
USDC is also off-limits for things like gambling, fraud, market manipulation (no insider trading here, folks), and, of course, purchasing anything that’s a fake or a knockoff. Apparently, counterfeit handbags are still a no-go, even in the crypto world. 👜
Circle has the right to “monitor or block” transactions, so if you get caught buying a weapon-or, let’s be real, anything that doesn’t vibe with their terms-you could find yourself banned from Circle Mint faster than you can say “Second Amendment.” 🛑
