So, it turns out Ethereum‘s core developers are in no hurry to mess with a good thing and have decided that the next major hard fork – the Fusaka upgrade – will hit the network in early December. December 3rd, to be precise, because, really, what’s better than launching a massive upgrade just in time for everyone to be on holiday mode? 🎉
But hold on to your hats, folks, because the real action happens after that. The blob capacity (yes, you read that right, “blob”) will double two weeks later, around December 17th, which is the digital equivalent of telling your friends, “Oh, I wasn’t done yet; let me throw more at you.” And just to make sure we don’t miss out on all the blob goodness, there will be yet another capacity bump on January 7, 2026. Because why not start the New Year with a little more blob? 🤷♂️
Ethereum researcher Christine D. Kim (who, judging by the name, probably knows more about blobs than you and I combined) assures us that these upgrades will more than double the blob capacity. So, we can all sleep easy knowing there’s plenty of blob to go around. 🛏️
Before all this digital wizardry lands on Ethereum’s mainnet, though, three public testnets will be underway between October and mid-November. The big question: Will these testnets explode in a giant cloud of sparks or will they actually work as planned? 🧪
“The initial conclusion is that we can go ahead with a Max blob count of 15 for BPO1 [Blob Parameter Only] and Max blob count of 21 for BPO2,” said Ethereum dev community member ethPandaOps. Of course, because who doesn’t love a good blob count? I mean, it’s not like we’re talking about significant world-changing events here, right? 😂
For the uninitiated, BPO (Blob-Parameter Only) forks are about tweaking the blob parameters without requiring any client-side updates. Basically, it’s like adding more seats to a plane without needing to tell anyone to move their luggage. Simple. 🛫
These blobs are pretty important. They help store large data sets offchain, meaning Layer-2 networks can do their thing more efficiently and – surprise, surprise – save a bit on transaction fees. But the blob usage is steadily climbing, thanks to the Dencun upgrade. The average blob count per block is now a whopping 5.1 (up from a humble 0.9 back in March 2023). Big numbers. Big blobs. Big dreams. 💭
And for those of you hoping to cash in on Ethereum’s next big leap, the Ethereum Foundation is offering a shiny $2 million bounty for discovering any vulnerabilities in the Fusaka codebase. That’s right, just find a bug, and boom – you’re rich. 🤑
In case you were wondering, Fusaka follows the Pectra upgrade from May 7th, which boosted validator staking limits, brought in account abstraction (because who doesn’t love abstract things?), and improved Layer-2 efficiency. So yeah, just another day at the office for Ethereum. 🖥️
Ethereum’s Exit Queue Hits an All-Time High
In other news, Ethereum’s exit queue is breaking records, with a staggering 2.6 million ETH (that’s around $12 billion, by the way) entering the queue last week. You know, just a casual move for Ethereum validators looking to cash out. Meanwhile, the queue to join the staking pool is at a four-week low, because, naturally, everyone’s wondering if they’ll be able to sell their ETH without it crashing in the process. 😬
The wait time to leave the exit queue is now 43 days, which is basically like standing in line for your favorite concert tickets. But fear not, Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin reassures us that this long queue is intentional. After all, reducing the time would make Ethereum “much less trustworthy.” So, don’t worry – it’s all for our own good. 🙄
Of course, Vitalik had to respond to Galaxy Digital’s head of DeFi, Michael Marcantonio, who called the exit queue “troubling.” Because, let’s face it, nothing says “I care” like a public spat over blockchain wait times.
