Amidst the hallowed halls of the crypto community, where whispers of Satoshi Nakamoto still linger like the scent of a forgotten cigar, two titans of the Bitcoin world, Peter Todd and Adam Back, have once again locked horns. The subject? A rather audacious proposal to transform Bitcoin into a cryptographic accumulator, thereby rendering any form of censorship as futile as a teetotaler at a Bacchanalian feast.
While Mr. Back, ever the innovator, took to Twitter to share his latest brainchild, Mr. Todd, with the grace of a seasoned veteran, reminded everyone that he had been championing this idea since 2013. One might say, it’s like discovering that Shakespeare was actually a blogger.
Back Proposes a Revolutionary Way to Enhance Bitcoin Privacy
In a tweet that could either be the dawn of a new era or the beginning of a digital dystopia, Adam Back proposed enhancing Bitcoin’s cryptographic fungibility as technology advances. The result, he envisions, would be a blockchain transformed into “a cryptographic accumulator.”
“You can’t censor anything, you can’t filter anything,” Back declared, with the enthusiasm of a man who’s just discovered the joys of unfiltered internet. “It’s all blobs.” The term “blobs,” borrowed from Ethereum’s Duncan upgrade, refers to large data objects designed to optimize rollups. In essence, Back is suggesting that Bitcoin borrow a page from Ethereum’s playbook, much like a student copying homework from a more studious peer.
However, Back also issued a cautionary note, warning that if Bitcoin reaches this state, where transactions are as traceable as a ghost in a haunted house, there is a significant risk of “spam tradeoffs running amok.” One can almost hear the echoes of a digital Wild West, where the only law is the law of the blob.
Todd Reacts to Back’s Proposal with a Dash of Sarcasm
Peter Todd, never one to let a good opportunity for a quip pass, quoted Back’s tweet and remarked, “I’ve been talking about this type of system for over a decade now too.” He even provided a link to a blog post from 2013, titled “Disentangling Crypto-Coin Mining: Timestamping, Proof-of-Publication, and Validation.” It’s as if he’s saying, “Been there, done that, got the T-shirt.”
This.
I’ve been talking about this type of system for over a decade now too:

In the comments, Todd responded to a curious X user, who wondered if future Bitcoin blocks would resemble a digital landfill. “Having blocks completely full of indistinguishable garbage would be great for privacy,” Todd quipped, with the deadpan delivery of a stand-up comedian on a particularly bad night.
