You Won’t Believe Which Crypto Moguls Are Spilling the Beans in This Actor’s Debut!

Ben McKenzie—the chap you might remember as that brooding fellow from Gotham and The OC (ah, simpler times, with just angst and moody lighting)—has decided to hang up his Batcave pass and take a swipe at high finance. Specifically, crypto. 😏

According to some newsy types at Deadline, McKenzie has put pen to paper, called the shots, and even footed the bill for a documentary with a title that doesn’t leave much room for ambiguity: Everyone Is Lying To You For Money. Jolly subtle, that one. It’s set to debut at SXSW London in June—if you can endure the chill and the queue for flat whites, you might catch a glimpse.

This cinematic rollercoaster includes 2022 footage featuring Sam “Love My Acronyms” Bankman-Fried (SBF to his mates and prosecutors) and Alex Mashinsky, captured in all their glory before their companies took the plunge, Titanic-style. 🎬

As McKenzie reportedly mused, “Why is the false story of crypto still spreading?” Quite. One suspects it’s got something to do with people liking the idea of infinite wealth and not being terribly fussed about the details. And so, with Deadline’s Jacob Silverman in tow, our fearless thespian galloped away from Hollywood and into the wild lands of Crypto Skepticism, circa 2021. Especially after FTX’s nosedive in 2022, when McKenzie found himself testifying before the US Senate—a place not known for its catchy dialogue or catering.

The documentary, in addition to trotting out SBF and Mashinsky for a hearty natter, takes an excitable peek at El Salvador’s Nayib Bukele, who, in a move that startled even his barista, decided Bitcoin should be as legal as hot chocolate in 2021. One expects hijinks.

What exactly these exclusive interviews with Bankman-Fried and Mashinsky will reveal is as uncertain as a meme coin’s value after midnight. The fine inquirers at CryptoMoon did attempt to secure a McKenzie comment, but shockingly, none was forthcoming—perhaps Ben was busy perfecting his withering stare.

Bankman-Fried in prison, Mashinsky auditioning for a cell

Bankman-Fried, who has already been the poster boy for more documentaries and hardback exposes than one could shake a ledger at, was found guilty on seven rather serious charges and received a 25-year booking—no upgrades or room service—in 2024.

As for Mashinsky, he opted for a plea deal, admitting to two felony charges (not the kind that look good on a résumé) and is currently waiting to see if he’ll match his former colleague’s sentence, with the authorities suggesting a tidy 20-year stint. If it were a contest, SBF seems to have edged Mashinsky—if only by half a decade.
