The esteemed SEC, ever determined to make sense of the chaotic world of cryptocurrency, is gearing up for its next roundtable on custody. It’s all about those major players and the legal minds who are tasked with taming this digital beast.

Custody Steals the Spotlight at SEC’s 3rd Crypto Roundtable

On the 16th day of April, the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) has kindly informed us of its upcoming crypto custody roundtable, which shall be held on the 25th of April. This event is part of their ambitious quest to regulate the thrilling realm of digital assets. One might say it’s their grand attempt at ensuring the Wild West of crypto is brought to some semblance of order—well, as much order as anyone could ever expect in this world.

Entitled “Know Your Custodian: Key Considerations for Crypto Custody,” this roundtable will take place from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. at the SEC’s very own headquarters in Washington D.C. And lest you think they’re simply dabbling in this crypto conundrum, let it be known that this is but the third round in their ongoing “Spring Sprint Toward Crypto Clarity”—yes, you read that right—a five-part public roundtable series under the watchful eye of the SEC’s Crypto Task Force. I dare say, it’s quite the ambitious title, don’t you think?

Commissioner Hester M. Peirce, the valiant leader of this illustrious task force, has declared that the SEC must, of course, confront these custody issues, for they are perhaps the most difficult to untangle. She eagerly anticipates hearing from the brilliant minds who will undoubtedly try to make sense of it all. Ah, how delightful!

“It is important for the SEC to grapple with custody issues, which are some of the most challenging as we seek to integrate crypto assets into our regulatory structure. We look forward to hearing from experts on these important issues.”

The roundtable promises to be a thrilling affair, beginning with remarks from the Acting SEC Chairman Mark Uyeda, Commissioner Caroline Crenshaw, Commissioner Peirce, and Richard Gabbert, the ever-dutiful Chief of Staff of the Crypto Task Force. And let us not forget the two splendid panels which will follow, both moderated by the highly esteemed Zach Zweihorn of Davis Polk & Wardell LLP. The first panel will include representatives from Fireblocks, Anchorage Digital Bank, Fidelity Digital Asset Services, Kraken, Exodus Movement, Etana Custody, and Copper Technologies. Quite the gathering, I dare say! A veritable who’s who of crypto custody.

The second panel promises to be just as riveting, featuring legal experts, investment professionals, and academics, including Adam Levitin of Georgetown University Law Center and Charles Mooney from the University of Pennsylvania. One can hardly wait to hear their sage advice on such matters!

This third roundtable is the latest in the SEC’s ongoing series. The first session, held on March 21, concerned the ever-important question of what constitutes a digital asset security. Following that, on April 11, they held a discussion on the regulatory issues faced by crypto trading platforms. And now, the April 25th roundtable shall tackle the highly pressing issue of the safe storage and protection of crypto assets. One might say, the stakes are high indeed!

Looking ahead, the SEC has two more events scheduled for May and June. The May session will explore tokenization and the delicate dance between decentralized technologies and traditional finance. But the June 6th roundtable, titled “DeFi and the American Spirit,” will surely capture the hearts and minds of many, as it delves into decentralized finance and its supposed compatibility with the core values of the American way. Such an event may well inspire a few impassioned speeches, I daresay. And of course, all of these sessions are open to the public (perhaps even some of you daring souls might attend?) and will be streamed live on the SEC website, with in-person attendance available by registration. Truly, a spectacle not to be missed!
