Recently on crypto Twitter, people have been talking about how the systems we use for sending money internationally are old and inefficient. Many believe XRP is being developed to address these problems and modernize global payments.
“Wire Transfers” Are Still Stuck in the Past
Ripple CEO Brad Garlinghouse recently gave a strong critique of how traditional financial systems work. He didn’t just point out problems with SWIFT transactions; he explained why the system itself feels old and needs updating.
“I imagine everyone here has done a SWIFT-enabled transaction… you call it a wire transfer.”
He then highlighted an often-missed point: the term ‘wire transfer’ actually originates from the old system of telegram wires – a technology that hasn’t adapted to the digital age of the internet.
That statement resonates because it highlights just how outdated our current payment systems are. While the way we communicate has rapidly changed from letters to instant messages, sending money internationally still depends on technology built decades ago.
Ripple’s Real Goal: Move Money Like Data
Garlinghouse made it clear this isn’t just about competing with banks or SWIFT:
Are we rivals to SWIFT? Yes. But fundamentally, Ripple aims to enable value to transfer as easily and quickly as information does now.
Sending money abroad currently often takes a long time, involves several banks and services, and can be expensive. Ripple aims to change that by enabling instant money transfers, similar to how quickly you can send a text or email.
The Early Internet Analogy That Explains Everything
To simplify it, Garlinghouse compared today’s financial system to the early days of the internet:
“I had a Prodigy account, I had an AOL account… there was also CompuServe.”
The biggest problem back then was that you couldn’t send emails between CompuServe and AOL – the systems just weren’t compatible.
In the past, digital platforms didn’t easily connect with each other. Today’s payment systems are similar – they’re broken up into separate parts, slow to process transactions, and don’t always work seamlessly together.
Ripple, with its cryptocurrency XRP, aims to revolutionize how money moves online, making it as easy and seamless as sharing information on the internet.
