Imagine, if you will, a world where teenagers are not just content with stealing your lunch money or sneaking into R-rated movies. No, these enterprising young souls decided to up the ante by embarking on a 600-mile road trip to rob a couple of $66 million in Bitcoin. Because, you know, why aim for a lemonade stand when you can go for the whole orchard?
At the helm of this operation, allegedly, was a man known only as “Red.” Yes, Red. Like the color, or perhaps a particularly fiery crayon. Police are still scratching their heads over his identity, which is either a testament to his genius or their incompetence. I’ll let you decide.
The Great Crypto Caper: A Tale of Duct Tape and Poor Life Choices
During a March 17 court hearing in Maricopa County, prosecutors revealed that Red and his sidekick, the mysteriously named “8,” had been orchestrating the whole thing via the encrypted app Signal. Because nothing says “professional criminal” like a username that sounds like a bowling score. These masterminds allegedly handed the teens, Jackson Sullivan (17) and Skylar LaPaille (16), $1,000 to buy supplies. You know, the essentials: duct tape, zip ties, and probably a few energy drinks for the long drive.
The target? A couple sitting on a cool $66 million in Bitcoin. Because who needs a safe deposit box when you can just keep your life savings in the cloud? The teens drove from San Luis Obispo, California, to Scottsdale, Arizona, a journey that I can only assume was soundtracked by a mix of bad pop music and existential dread.

Dressed to Impress, Armed with Subterfuge
The teens arrived at the couple’s home dressed as delivery drivers, complete with a fake package and a dolly. Because nothing says “we’re here to rob you” like showing up in a costume you bought online. When the homeowner answered the door, they forced their way inside, proving that sometimes the best security system is a good deadbolt and a healthy dose of skepticism.
What followed was a scene straight out of a low-budget heist movie. The couple was duct-taped and beaten while the teens demanded access to their cryptocurrency wallets. The homeowner later told the court, “I have had a concussion. I’ve had a broken rib.” Because nothing says “successful robbery” like leaving your victims with medical bills.
The couple’s adult son, meanwhile, hid and called 911. Because sometimes the best course of action is to let the professionals handle it.

Officers Arrived While The Break-In Was Still Happening
Police showed up before the teens could make their grand exit. Sullivan and LaPaille fled in a car with stolen plates, driving the wrong way into oncoming traffic. Because when you’re already in trouble, why not add a few more charges to the list?
They were arrested just after 11:30 a.m. on January 31, leaving behind duct tape, zip ties, a 3D-printed unloaded gun, and a burner phone. Essentially, the remnants of a very bad idea.

Both teens now face nine felony charges, including aggravated assault, kidnapping, and second-degree burglary. Sullivan was released on a $50,000 cash-only bond and is wearing an electronic monitor. LaPaille’s bond was also set at $50,000, though it’s unclear if he’s posted it. Their attorneys are arguing the teens were manipulated, which is a nice way of saying they were in over their heads.
The teens themselves told investigators they were extorted into the crime. Because nothing says “I’m a victim” like robbing someone at gunpoint. The FBI is aware of the investigation but isn’t currently involved, which is either a vote of confidence in local law enforcement or a subtle way of saying, “This is your mess to clean up.”
As for Red, he remains at large, a ghost in the machine. Prosecutors don’t know where he is, but I like to imagine he’s somewhere laughing maniacally, sipping a martini, and planning his next great caper. Or maybe he’s just hiding in his mom’s basement. Who knows?
