In a plot twist straight out of a Saturday-night comedy, a Texas construction firm has decided to hand out cash like a generous uncle at a family reunion. Turns out, the only thing more shocking than a sudden leak of personal data is the promise of free money.
According to the settlement admin portal, Mason Construction will pay between $55 and a dazzling $5,000 per victim in a class action lawsuit that spewed accusations of negligence and a grave lack of data security. Think of it as the corporate version of a “giveaway” – except the giveaway is now legal!
Victims who suffered losses from January 6th, 2024 to January 1st, 2026 because of identity theft or fraud triggered by the data breach can prove their woes and collect up to $5,000. And because nothing says “thank you” like a $500 voucher for replacing IDs, credit monitoring, or a smooth sleight-of-hand to freeze or unfreeze credit, they’ll get that too.
And for the hours you’ve spent crying into your pillow in front of a stack of “Please provide documentation” emails, Mason’s got your back-$25 an hour for up to three hours. That’s the firm’s most generous way of saying “You did the paperwork, we did the finances.”
The lawsuit, filed in March of 2025, revealed that an unauthorized party opened the vault of secrets between January 6th and January 20th, 2024. Apparently, someone didn’t lock the door.
“The review confirmed that names, Social Security numbers, driver’s license numbers, government-issued ID numbers (such as passports and state ID cards), financial information (account numbers and credit or debit card numbers), medical information, and health insurance data-collectively dubbed ‘Private Information’-were siphoned during the data breach,” the report declared, as if the accountant had read a spoiler alert on a spy thriller.
Claims must be filed by June 1st. The final hearing is set for June 4th. Mark your calendars-this courtroom drama is a binge-worthy event that’s cheaper than a Netflix subscription.
Despite the settlement, Mason Construction insists they did nothing wrong, and the court hasn’t decided this plot twist yet. So sit back, sip coffee, and watch the drama unfold.
