In a plot twist that could only be scripted by the most mischievous of deities, Braden Karony, a sprightly 29 years young and the self-proclaimed captain of the once-viral cryptocurrency ship known as SafeMoon, found himself sentenced to a rather lengthy stay-100 months, to be precise-in the grand establishment known as federal prison. That’s over eight years, which is just long enough to learn how to bake bread with all the enthusiasm of a novice in a reality show.
The gavel came down, marking the end of a saga that was less ‘Cinderella’ and more ‘Cinder-fraud.’ The once-promising token had been revealed to be about as trustworthy as a chocolate teapot-a “massive fraud,” as it were. Who could have guessed?
Judge Eric Komitee, a man whose name suggests he may have been destined for judicial greatness, presided over the hearing with a demeanor that oscillated between bemusement and exasperation. He listened patiently as defense lawyers regaled the court with tales of Karony’s upbringing, which apparently involved a lot of “well, he didn’t mean to” and “he thought it would all work out.” Meanwhile, the victims-poor souls caught in this financial tempest-provided testimony so grim that one could almost hear the collective sigh of despair echoing through the courtroom.
“This is more like theft than fraud,” Judge Komitee quipped, probably after a particularly strong cup of coffee, before delivering his verdict. “It was not a small loss per person like in many securities frauds.” Ah, yes, the judge clearly prefers his frauds to be on the more palatable side of ‘petty thievery.’
As the hearing unfolded, victims took turns painting a picture so bleak of their financial ruin that it could easily serve as the backdrop for a dystopian film. They recounted their experiences with all the gusto of beleaguered adventurers who had encountered a dragon that turned out to be a particularly nasty accountant.
