The 2026 FIFA World Cup kicks off on June 11th, hosted jointly by the United States, Mexico, and Canada. Even before the games begin, the cryptocurrency world is already responding to the event with new markets and activity.
Not all tokens linked to the World Cup offer the same visibility. The market is now divided into three groups: projects with official football partnerships, and those using FIFA branding without permission.
A third group consists entirely of speculative meme coins built around national teams.
Knowing the distinction can help investors tell legitimate crypto projects focused on football apart from fleeting trends.
The Three Layers of the World Cup 2026 Crypto Trade
World Cup-related crypto assets currently fall into three categories:
- Licensed football infrastructure and fan tokens
- Unofficial FIFA-themed meme coins
- National-team meme coins on Solana
Each layer responds to different catalysts as the tournament approaches.
Layer 1: Licensed Football Tokens With Real Partnerships
This category contains the strongest connection to global football.
Chiliz (CHZ) and Fan Tokens
Chiliz is still the leading cryptocurrency platform for football fans, primarily through its Socios app. It allows fans to buy fan tokens for their favorite clubs and national teams, offering a direct way to participate in the excitement around major tournaments.
CHZ is currently trading at around $0.0339, giving it a market value of about $352 million. However, the token’s price has been declining, falling almost 10% in the last week and 17.5% over the past month.
In March 2026, a significant change happened when US officials decided fan tokens should be treated as digital collectibles, not as investments. This decision cleared a major hurdle and allowed Chiliz to move forward more confidently with its growth plans in the US.
Among national-team tokens, the most closely watched include:
Argentine Football Association Fan Token (ARG)
- Price: ~$0.41
- Market Cap: ~$7.5 million
- Up 6.5% on the week
- Down 47% on the month
Portugal National Team Fan Token (POR)
- Price: ~$0.37
- Market Cap: ~$4.6 million
Fan tokens usually become more volatile during the group stages of a competition, as how well a team is playing affects how people trade them.
Avalanche (AVAX)
Avalanche offers a different type of World Cup exposure.
FIFA chose Avalanche to power its new blockchain network, which supports all of FIFA’s digital projects. Since launching FIFA Collect on the blockchain, over 85,000 digital wallets have been created.
AVAX currently trades near $8.95 with a market capitalization of roughly $3.86 billion.
FIFA President Gianni Infantino has often hinted at the potential for a FIFA-branded cryptocurrency. While there isn’t one available now, if an official coin is announced during the tournament, it’s likely to significantly impact how people feel about cryptocurrencies related to football.
On May 27th, ADI Predictstreet and Fanatics Markets teamed up with FIFA to launch the first official prediction market for FIFA events in several U.S. states.
Layer 2: Unofficial FIFA Meme Coins
In my analysis, I’ve identified a second group of tokens that feature FIFA branding, but currently, we haven’t been able to verify any official connection between these tokens and FIFA itself.
A prime example is the FIFA token, built on Ethereum, which recently saw its value climb to almost $77 million.
Other examples include:
- FWC26
- FWC
- FIFA世界杯
- Multiple duplicate FWC26 contracts
The biggest risk is confusion.
Lots of these projects have very similar names, even though they aren’t related. This often leads traders to mistakenly believe they’re purchasing the same investment when they’re actually buying something different.
Okay, so before I jump into any meme coin based on FIFA, I’m making sure I do my homework. That means checking out the token’s contract address – basically its digital fingerprint – and seeing how much liquidity it has, which is how easily I can buy or sell. I also want to know if a few big wallets own most of it, or if it’s spread out, and how active the trading actually is. Gotta be careful with these things!
Layer 3: Solana’s National-Team Meme Coin Ecosystem
The most speculative layer lives on Solana.
These new cryptocurrencies are mostly being launched on Pump.fun and aim to benefit from excitement around national teams, but they aren’t created through official team sponsorships.
WORLDCUP is the main token within its network. It experienced a significant price increase recently, jumping around 90% in just 24 hours and bringing its total market value close to $10 million.
The ecosystem also includes country-specific meme coins such as:
- FRANCE
- SPAIN
- PORTUGAL
- Similar tokens for all 48 qualified national teams
A special part of this system directs some trading fees from team tokens towards buying back WORLDCUP tokens. This creates a cycle where more attention on the tournament directly benefits token holders.
However, these assets carry the highest risk.
Ownership of these digital wallets is unevenly distributed, with a few people holding the majority. The value of many of these tokens relies heavily on current trends, what people are saying online, and how well teams perform. If a team loses, it could quickly lead to a drop in price as people sell their tokens.
Prediction Markets Already Show Clear Favorites
Prediction markets have become one of the largest crypto-adjacent World Cup narratives.
Trading activity for World Cup winner predictions on Polymarket and Kalshi has totaled around $416.7 million.
Current favorites include France, Spain, England, and Brazil.
Myriad is hosting a $100,000 trading contest for the World Cup, using Chainlink’s technology to make it all work.
Recent trends show more people are turning to prediction markets instead of traditional sportsbooks to bet on how tournaments will turn out.
What To Watch Before Kickoff
Different types of crypto assets are influenced by different things. Tokens like CHZ, AVAX, and fan tokens issued with licenses will likely increase in value as more people use them, when new partnerships are announced, and with greater involvement from institutions. Fan tokens for national teams, on the other hand, will probably perform better when their teams win matches or when there’s news about the governing bodies of those teams.
Solana-based meme coins are still very sensitive to what people are feeling and who’s talking about them online. We might see some of these coins jump in value during the tournament, but that boost likely won’t last once the event is over.
The biggest wildcard remains FIFA itself.
A new digital currency released by FIFA during the World Cup could cause significant and immediate changes in the value of all crypto related to the event.
Before investing, it’s important for investors to tell the difference between officially approved football projects, tokens that simply claim to be related to FIFA, and risky, purely speculative meme coins.
