A Most Peculiar Pile of Bitcoin…
- So, Tether, that rather important stablecoin lot, decided to splash out a whopping 8,888.88 Bitcoins! 💰 Fancy that.
- It’s all part of their cunning plan to use a bit of their pocket money – up to 15% of their profits, you see – for these Bitcoin acquisitions.
- Apparently, it’s a way to keep things interesting without fiddling with the money that actually backs their stablecoin. Rather clever, if you ask me… (though I probably wouldn’t).
Right then. Tether, under the command of a chap called Paolo Ardoino, started 2026 by chucking a substantial amount of Bitcoin – 8,888.88, to be precise – into their treasury. It’s their Q4 2025 profit allocation, apparently. Must be nice.

This little purchase, worth a cheeky $780 million at today’s prices, means Tether is now one of the biggest Bitcoin-hoarding companies in the entire world. 🌍 Quietly, of course. They don’t want to cause a fuss.
Back in 2023, they had the brilliant idea of using up to 15% of their profits to gobble up Bitcoin whenever they felt like it. Proper systematic accumulating, that is! Not like those other businesses who have to ask for money first. 🙄
Now, here’s the truly brain-bending part. Tether’s profits come from the things backing their stablecoin – short-term U.S. Treasuries and repos. So, if interest rates are high and everyone wants stablecoins, they make more profit, and guess what? More Bitcoin! It’s a beautiful, slightly sinister circle. 🌀
Unlike companies who go begging for funds to buy Bitcoin, Tether’s arrangement is far more sensible (in their opinion). They’re simply using their extra cash to jazz up their reserves without messing with the funds that actually hold up the stablecoin.
And the timing? Oh, it’s exquisite! Bitcoin has been struggling a bit recently, teetering about like a wobbly jelly. 🍮 But Tether, in their infinite wisdom, decided now was a splendid moment. 🤔
Last I checked, one Bitcoin was going for around $89,000. A small fortune, really.
